Pomegranate

Pomegranate

Oh, the pomegranate,
Torah’s rimoneem,
Curvy orb and diva,
Crowned as if a queen.
Seeds abundant -- symbols
Of growth, prosperity,
Sweetest aspirations,
Faith, hope, and charity.

Years ago, I took a class called Signs and Symbols from the wonderful Rosalie Dace, where I started three of the quilt blocks that came to fruition only after a great deal of arranging and rearranging. The pomegranate feels personal to me, passionate, feminine, strong. Bulbous as a womb and my mother’s pottery alike. A spiky crown implying power and sense of a diva! Abundant seeds, each a kernel of grit and burst of lusciousness. Loaded with mythological, cultural, and religious meaning.
