Choice Nine-Patch

Choice Nine-Patch

13" square
2002

Nine is the number of justices who sit on the Supreme Court. Motifs and embellishments within the nine patches include:

  • A gingko leaf--because people take gingko to help them remember--quilted with the date 1973, the year Roe v. Wade was decided
  • Justice's robe, judge's gavel, scales of justice, a pillar upon which justice is based, the Supreme Court edifice
  • A fish with a sac of eggs ("Roe"), represented by one bead for each of the nine Supreme Court judges, and other watery wordplay-references to the name Wade
  • 5 to 4, the status of judicial stances re Roe v. Wade
  • My two cents worth-with 1973 pennies
